Late goals shove UP booters past NU
MANILA, Philippines — University of the Philippines came away with a 2-0 victory over National University to clinch a Final Four berth in the UAAP Season 80 men’s football tournament at the Rizal Memorial Stadium yesterday.
JB Borlongan and King Miyagi delivered the late goals for the Fighting Maroons, who firmed up their hold on top of the table with 26 points while securing a spot in the semis for the eighth straight year.
The Bulldogs were poised to drag them to a scoreless stalemate until Borlongan scored in the 86th minute.
UP then doubled the lead a minute later with a Miyagi strike from a Daniel Saavedra cross.
Defending champion Ateneo also scored a 2-0 win over University of Santo Tomas to close in on a semis slot.
The second-running Blue Eagles turned to reigning MVP Jarvey Gayoso and Koko Gaudiel to assure themselves of a semis playoff, improving to 25 points, one off the lead.
