MANILA, Philippines — Traffic enforcers in Metro Manila will no longer confiscate driver’s licenses under the single ticketing system, except in some situations, an official said yesterday.

Metro Manila Council president and San Juan Mayor Francis Zamora said while erring motorists can keep their driver’s license after being issued a violation ticket, it will be tagged with corresponding demerit points.

If the motorist opts not to pay the fines, Land Transportation Office records will reflect this and it is up to the LTO to determine whether or not to renew the license, he added.

“When the time comes to renew the license, the LTO system will show that the driver has unpaid fines due to the traffic violations. The driver cannot renew their license,” Zamora said in Filipino during a dzRH interview.

He warned that the LTO may either confiscate or revoke the driver’s license of motorists who accumulate a certain number of demerit points by being “perennial violators.”

Zamora said he hopes the single ticketing system will instill discipline in motorists in Metro Manila.

Under the single ticketing system, a uniform set of fines for common traffic violations will be imposed on drivers caught by traffic enforcers anywhere in Metro Manila.

Enforcers, wearing body cameras, will issue violation tickets using handheld devices connected to the LTO’s system.

These devices will also allow motorists to pay fines through digital means such as mobile wallets.

Motorists have to pay fines within 10 days from the date they were apprehended.
