Ateneo kakasa sa UP sa UAAP finale

MANILA, Philippines — Itinakda ng Ateneo De Manila University at nagdedepensang University of the Philippines ang kanilang championship rematch matapos manaig sa Final Four ng UAAP Season 85 men’s basketball tournament kahapon sa Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Dinagit ng No. 1 Blue Eagles ang No. 4 Adamson Soaring Falcons, 81-60, at pinatalsik ng No. 2 Figh­ting Maroons ang No. 3 National University, 69-61, para plantsahin ang muli nilang pagtutuos sa UAAP Finals.

Ito ang ikaanim na dikit na championship stint ng Ateneo na pinadapa ng UP sa nakaraan nilang titular showdown.

Mula sa 10-point halftime lead ay umarangkada ang Blue Eagles sa third period para iwanan ang Soaring Falcons sa 63-36 patungo sa pagtatala ng 80-55 abante sa huling 1:28 minuto ng fourth quarter.

Nagposte naman si fo­reign athlete Malick Diouf ng 17 points, 21 rebounds, 3 blocks at 2 assists para banderahan ang Fighting Maroons na hangad ang back-to-back title.

“We’re happy that we’ll be getting another chance to win the championship,” ani coach Goldwin Monteverde sa kanyang UP.

Nagdagdag si Zavier Lucero ng 12 points, 11 boards, 5 assists at 2 steals para sa  UP na tinapos ang kanilang duwelo ng NU sa 11-0 atake.

Samantala, isang panalo na lang ang kailangan ng NU Lady Bulldogs para sa pang-pitong sunod na korona makaraang daigin ang La Salle Lady Archers, 93-61, sa Game One ng women’s championship series. 

Ang Lady Archers ang tumapos sa makasaysa­yang 108-game winning streak ng Lady Bulldogs mula sa 61-57 overtime win noong Nobyembre 23.

“We coaches always remind the players to play this game in a 40-minute span. Kailangan, from the start, the middle, hanggang final buzzer, laruin namin kung anong laro ng team,” ani Lady Bulldogs’ coach Aris Dimaunahan.
