Obiena nakukulangan pa

MANILA, Philippines — Sa kanyang kabi-kabilang podium finishes ay nakukulangan pa rin si national pole vaulter Ernest John Obiena sa performance niya bago sumabak sa 2021 Olympic Games sa susunod na buwan sa Tokyo, Japan.

Ayon sa Philippine national indoor at outdoor record holder, may kulang pa sa kanyang pag-lundag.

“Training-wise, I still need a lot of things, I need to polish my technique, my speed, my efficiency,” wika ng 6-foot-2 na si Obiena, isa sa 12 Pinoy qualifiers sa 2021 Tokyo Olympics na nakatakda sa Hulyo 23 hanggang Agosto 8.

Inangkin kamakailan ni Obiena ang gold medal at sinira ang Philippine outdoor record sa kanyang nilundag na 5.85 metro sa Jump and Fly competition sa Mossingen, Germany.

Bago ito ay tumalon ang 25-anyos na si Obie-na ng 5.70m para angkinin ang gintong medalya sa Gothenburg Athletics Grand Prix sa Sweden.

“We’re still working on it and still a lot of things that sadly needs to be done until this time come Olympic day,” ani Obiena na sinasanay ni legendary coach Vitaly Petrov.

Plano ng kampo ni Obiena na paturukan ng COVID-19 vaccine ang 2019 Southeast Asian Games gold medal winner pagkatapos ng 2021 Tokyo Olympics.

Ito ay para hindi ma-kaapekto sa kanyang ginagawang training.

Ang iba pang sasabak sa quadrennial event ay sina shooter Jayson Valdez, weightlifters Hidilyn Diaz at Elreen Ando, skateboarder Margielyn Didal, gymnast Carlos Edriel Yulo, taekwondo jin Kurt Barbosa, rower Cris Nievarez at boxers Eumir Felix Marcial, Irish Magno, Nesthy Petecio at Carlo Paalam.
