6-man national surfing team aasinta ng Olympic berth

MANILA, Philippines — Agad-agad ay malalaman ng six-man Philippine surfing team kung pasok sila sa 2021 Olympic Games sa Tokyo, Japan.

Ito ay dahil hindi na gagamitin ng International Surfing Association (ISA) sa idaraos na World Surfing Games ang qualifying format at sa halip ay magsisilbi itong automatic qualifier para sa 2021 Tokyo Olympics.

Ginawa ito ng ISA dahil sa coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic na nagpakansela sa mga sur­fing tournaments.

“I’m very confident about it, our surfers will climb the top,” sabi ni United Philippine Surfing Association (UPSA) president Dr. Raul Canlas. “The qualifiers will be a do-or-die competition so I like our chances.”

Nakatakdang umalis bukas ang anim na national surfers para lumahok sa World Surfing Games sa Mayo 29 hanggang Hunyo 6 sa El Sunzal, El Salvador.

Pangungunahan nina 2019 Southeast Asian Games gold medalist Nilbie Blancada at SEA Games silver medalist Jay-R Esquivel ang kampanya ng bansa sa nasabing Olympic qualifying meet.

Pupuntirya rin ng Olympic spot sina 2019 SEA Games bronze medalist Daisy Valdez, SEA Games bronze medalist John Mark ‘Marama’ Tokong, Edito ‘Piso’ Alcala Jr. at Vea Estrellado.

Sasalang ang anim na national surfers sa shortboard category.
