Pang-4 karate gold ni DeLos Santos

MANILA, Philippines — Matapos ang dalawang sunod na kabiguan ay niresbakan ni Filipino karateka OJ Delos Santos si World No. 1 Eduardo Garcia ng Portugal para pagwagian ang Athletes’ E-Tournament.

Nilusutan ng 30-an-yos na si Delos Santos, ang World No. 2 seed, si Garcia, 25-24.9, para sa kanyang ikaapat na gold medal sa nasabing virtual tournament.

Ito ang unang panalo ni Delos Santos laban sa Portugese na tumalo sa kanya sa SportsData E-Tournament World Series noong Mayo at sa Adidas Karate World Open Series #2 kamakailan.

“This is the third time I’ve faced him (Garcia) in a final showdown,” wika ni Delos Santos. “This victory means a lot, this will motivate me to train harder for the upcoming virtual tournaments.”

Ang naging susi sa kanyang panalo, ayon sa two-time Southeast Asian Games bronze medalist, ay ang paggamit niya sa kata style na Unsu mula sa Sansai na payo sa kanya ni Japanese coach Masa Saito para talunin si Garcia.

“My first two times were unlucky. I have to admit, he’s a tough player to beat, but when the third time came around, my coach from Japan and parents suggested I use my favorite kata Unsu and it finally paid off,” sabi pa ni Delos Santos.

Ang susunod na puntirya ni Delos Santos, hindi naisama sa national team na sumabak noong 2019 SEA Games, ay ang ungusan si Garcia sa pagiging No. 1. “Hopefully, I could cling to that hope of catching up on him at No. 1,” aniya.
