MANILA, Philippines — Nagposte ng bagong record si Pinoy track and field star EJ Obiena sa 23rd Asian Athletics Cham-pionships sa Doha, Qatar.

Naglista ang 23-anyos na si Obiena ng 5.71 metro para ungusan sina Zhang Wei at Huang Bokai ng China na nagtala ng parehong 5.66m para angkinin ang gold medal sa men’s pole vault.

Ang 5.71m ni Obiena ay mas maganda sa kasalukuyang Southeast Asian Games record na 5.35m na inirehistro ni reigning gold medal winner Porranot Purahong ng Thailand noong 2017 edition ng biennial meet sa Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Pumangalawa si Obiena kay Purahong sa nasabing SEA Games.

“We at PATAFA feel vindicated by the victory of EJ. He has been training overseas since he was 18 years old when he got the IAAF scholarship upon hitting the 5.0-meter mark,” sabi ni PATAFA president Philip Ella Juico. “Six years later, he jumped 5.71m.

Bumandera sina Zhang, ang Asian Indoor silver medalist na kumuha ng gold medal sa nasabing event sa Wuhan, China noong 2017, at Huang, dating Asian Junior champion at 2016 Asian Indoor gold medal winner, sa unang tatlong attempts bago nangibabaw si Obiena sa huling tatlo niyang attempts.

Ang nasabing lundag ni Obiena ang bagong Asian Athletics Championship record na bumura sa sarili niyang national mark na 5.61m na kanyang itinala sa Stabhochsprung Classic sa Leverkusen, Germany noong 2017.

Dahil dito ay nabigyan si Obiena ng slot para sa 2019 World Championships sa Setyembre sa Doha.

“This success was made possible through long-term, not token short term investments, and the persistence of PATAFA and the Obiena family in supporting EJ,” dagdag pa nito.
