Ibang sports bigyan din ng pansin — Cerdena

MANILA, Philippines — Sa pag-angkin ni weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz sa unang Olympic gold medal ng bansa ay naniniwala ang dalawang dating Pinoy Olympians na mabibigyan ng pansin ang mga sports na hindi napapahalagahan.

Ayon kina bowler Arianne Cerdena at taekwondo jin Stephen Fernandez, may mga sports pang maaaring umangat ang mga Pinoy athletes kagaya ng shooting, archery, gymnastics at bowling.

“I always believe na sa mga sports na walang weight at height na requirement, we can develop that sport,” wika kahapon ni Cerdena, kumuha ng gold medal sa women’s bowling (demonstration) noong 1988 Seoul Olympics, sa lingguhang TOPS Usapang Sports on Air.

Si Cerdena ay kasalukuyang registered nurse sa Amerika.

“Dito sa Amerika alaga ang mga athletes dito,” wika ng dating national bowler. “Kumpleto sila, they have trained as fighters and winners, and especially sa ibang sports na kailangan talagang mag-gain.”

Tinapos ni Diaz ang 97 taon na paghihintay ng bansa para sa Olympic gold nang pagreynahan ang women’s 55-kilogram division ng Tokyo Games weightlifting competition.

“Marami talagang sports na puwede tayong mag-excel like individual sports, lalo na iyong mga naglalaro sa Tokyo na individual sports that has proven already na we can win,” ani Fernandez, sumipa ng bronze medal sa taekwondo (demonstration) noong 1992 Barcelona Olympics.

Umaasa rin ang dating taekwondo jin sa patuloy na suporta ng private sector sa Philippine Sports Commission (PSC).

“This is the time that the government and the private sectors work together para maging sustainable,” ani Fernandez.
