4-taekwondo jins magtatangka ring makasama sa Tokyo Olympics

MANILA, Philippines — Apat na national taekwondo jins ang tatarget ng silya para sa 2021 Olympic Games sa Tokyo, Japan sa Hulyo.

Sasabak sina veteran Kirstie Elaine Alora, 2019 Southeast Asian Games medalists Pauline Lopez, Kurt Barbosa at Arven Alcantara sa Asian qualifiers sa Mayo 14-16 sa Amman, Jordan.

Hangad ng 31-anyos na si Alora, ang silver medalist sa women’s 73-kilogram division noong 2019 SEA Games, ang kanyang ikalawang sunod na Olympic ticket.

Naglaro si Alora sa Olympics sa Rio de Janeiro, Brazil noong 2016 kung saan siya maagang pinatalsik ni dating Olympic champion María Espinoza ng Mexico sa first round. Umaasa si Alora, sumipa ng tatlong gold medals sa SEA Games noong 2005 (Manila), 2007 (Jakarta-Palembang) at 2013 (Naypyidaw), na muli siyang makakalaro sa Olympics bago tuluyang magretiro.

Para makakuha ng Olympic berth ay kailangang pumasok sa finals sina Alora, Lopez, Barbosa at Acantara sa kani-kanilang weight classes.

“To make it to the Olympics, they just have to make it to the top 2 in the tournament. There will be no finals there,” wika ni national training director Dindo Simpao.

Bilang paghahanda sa Olympic qualifying tournament ay pumasok ang mga national taekwondo jins sa ‘bubble’ training sa Inspire Sports Academy sa Calamba, Laguna.
