Cone swak sa Gilas!
Pero hanggang Sea Games lang muna
MANILA, Philippines — Pormal nang inihayag ng Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) na hahawakan ni Barangay Ginebra mentor Tim Cone ang Gilas Pilipinas na sasabak sa 2019 Southeast Asian Games.
Ayon kay SBP president Al Panlilio, tinanggap na ni Cone ang tungkulin na manduhan ang Pinoy cagers sa pagdepensa ng titulo sa biennial meet na idaraos sa Pilipinas sa Nobyembre 30 hanggang Disyembre 11.
“I spoke to Tim Cone last Saturday and he expressed interested but wanted to finish his game last night and talk to his family first. Now I’m very happy to announce that coach Tim has officially accepted the role as head coach for Gilas Pilipinas Men in the upcoming SEA Games,” ani Panlilio.
Perpekto si Cone sa posisyon dahil sa malalim nitong karanasan sa local at international competitions.
Ang 61-anyos veteran mentor ang winningest coach sa liga tangan ang 21 kampeonato.
May basbas nina San Miguel Corporation President Ramon S. Ang at Sports Director Alfrancis Chua ang pagpasok ni Cone sa Gilas Pilipinas.
Ngunit nilinaw ni Panlilio na sa ngayon, hanggang sa SEA Games lamang ang hahawakan ni Cone.
“The resolution of our head coach situation should signify the start of our SEA Games preparations because the other countries like Indonesia are already putting in the work. We also want to reiterate that we’re taking it one step at a time and this arrangement is for the SEA Games only, for now. We’re still putting together a plan on how to move forward with our preparations for 2023 and beyond,” ani Panlilio.
Makikipagpulong pa ang SBP kay Cone upang malaman ang mga kaila-ngan nito partikular na sa pagpili ng coaching staff at ang pinaka-importante ang pagpili ng mga players na isasabak sa SEA Games.
“We should keep mo-ving forward with the Gilas program. We should keep improving even if it’s just incrementally. Basketball is the Filipino people’s favorite sport so we can’t turn our back on it,” ani SBP chairman emeritus Manny V. Pangilinan.
