MANILA, Philippines — Wala nang magagawa ang Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas kundi ang tanggapin ang parusang ipinataw ng International Basketball Federation (FIBA) kahapon.

Sa ipinatawag na press conference ay sinabi ni SBP president Al Panlilio na gusto nilang malinawan sa FIBA ang ilang detalye sa nasabing desisyon ng FIBA Disciplinary Panel.

“The incident was caused by disappointment, then we offered apologies. It could’ve been much worse,” ani Panlilio.“It’s something we should accept but at the same time clarify some facts.”

Sampung miyembro ng Gilas Pilipinas ang pinatawan ng suspensyon ng FIBA sa pangunguna ni Alaska small forward Calvin Abueva na nakatikim ng pinakamabigat na parusa.

Isang six-game ban ang ipinataw kay Abueva, habang five-game suspensions naman ang natikman nina RR Pogoy, Carl Bryan Cruz at Jio Jalalon, nakasibilyan at nakisuntok sa ilang players ng Australia.

Kaagad makikipagpulong si  Panlilio sa PBA para sa mga players na hihiramin bilang kapalit ng nasuspinding 10 miyembro ng Gilas Pilipinas na lalaban sa second round ng 2019 FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers simula sa Setyembre.

“We just have to continue to fight and play. We can’t give up,” sabi ni Panlilio. “We haven’t come up with the list of names to be put in the pool but in due time. Right now coaches are suspended so we have to know who can coach the Iran game.”

Pinagbabayad din ng FIBA ang SBP ng discipli­nary fine na 250,000 Swiss Francs (halos P13 milyon).

“We can learn from this incident and make it a little bit more secure. We controlled 20K spectators that night and that is a feat,” dagdag ni Panlilio.
