Resorts World Manila conducts medical mission to Eastern Samar towns

MANILA, Philippines - Over a year after super typhoon Yolanda hit, Resorts World Manila (RWM) continues to send aid to those who survived the calamity through various relief and rebuilding efforts. Recently, RWM employees went on a medical mission to calamity-stricken towns in Eastern Samar.

Composed of members of corporate social responsibility (CSR) and safety & security teams, the RWM volunteers conducted disaster preparedness trainings and donated first aid kits to the residents of Hernani, Balangkayan, Maydolong, Salcedo, and General McArthur in Eastern Samar. RWM was one of the first humanitarian groups to provide relief effort and medical assistance to these worst-hit coastal towns during the storm’s aftermath.

Over 1,700 individuals from the five municipalities received medical aid in terms of consultation, treatment, and medicine from the RWM team. The mission also trained close to 300 community volunteers on first aid and basic life support procedures complemented with a donation of 150 first aid kits which are invaluable during emergency situations.

“Being one of the first groups to respond to these affected towns after Yolanda hit, we made it our mission to come back and follow through by providing additional aid for the residents. Apart from donating time and resources, our efforts here are designed to equip the community with the technical know-how in dealing with future emergency situations,” said RWM Director for Corporate Communications Owen Cammayo. “This is all part of RWM’s commitment towards implementing sustainable rehabilitation programs for the survivors of this calamity.”

Also part of its relief and rebuilding efforts in Eastern Visayas, RWM is in the midst of a community-building project which will provide new homes for affected families in Barangay Dolores, Ormoc City, Leyte. The mission is to turnover 240 newly constructed houses with the help of partner organization Habitat for Humanity Philippines.

The adopted community will be named Sun and Moon Village as a tribute to Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schönberg’s philantrophic endeavor. The renowned theater composers produced a benefit concert “Do You Hear the People Sing?” held last January at RWM’s Newport Performing Arts theater which raised Php28.8 million to make the rebuilding efforts possible.

To supplement the construction project, on-site TESDA trainings on masonry and carpentry initiated by the local beneficiary-partner cooperative are being conducted. These learning opportunities provide existing and future residents of Sun and Moon Village with the basic skills and knowledge essential to sustain the new community.
