Alaminos takes environmental excellence award

MANILA, Philippines - Alaminos City, home of the world-famous Hundred Islands, received the 2010 Likas Yaman Award for Environmental Excellence from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources during the closing of the Environmental Month celebration held in San Fernando City, La Union recently. 

Alaminos was awarded the “Best Local Government Unit (LGU)-Initiated Environmental Project Award” for its pioneering efforts in the conservation, protection and rehabilitation of its vast ecosystem and rich natural resources. 

The award validation team said the city clinched the award for promoting sustainable development of the coastal and marine resources through mangrove reforestation, fish sanctuary management, mariculture development, coral reef protection, river enhancement and protection, marine park and wildlife conservation.

Alaminos was also cited for its superb fishery laws enforcement and the utmost promotion of its eco-tourism thrusts which are guided on the principles of pro-active, participatory, good governance and excellent leadership

The Alaminos City National High School (ACNHS) also garnered the “Most Outstanding School Environmental Outreach Program Award” for successfully initiating and implementing environmental projects and programs in the school and in the community.

“With this award, Alaminos cemented its status as one of the leading environmental champions in Region I,” said City Administrator Wilmer Panabang, who received the award in behalf of the city.

In 2006 and 2007, Alaminos was declared the Best Performing LGU in Coastal Resource Management in the Ilocos region. Last May, PAKAR Award went to Bued River in Alaminos for being the cleanest inland body of water in Pangasinan.
