Starweek Magazine

Through the years

IN MY BASKET - Lydia D. Castillo - The Philippine Star

We are delighted that some homemakers have taken up profitable home endeavors like baking and producing special food to sell. Happily, we made some personal friends and found interested readers through the years.

We share the joy and pride of the management and staff of The Philippine STAR in celebration of the daily’s 32nd anniversary. We express our gratitude for giving us the space for “In My Basket” in its Sunday magazine STARweek. For more than two decades we have endeavored to help families, basically homemakers (and househusbands, too) in preparing their basic nutrition needs each day.

It was nearly two decades ago when our friend, the late Lydia Santos, who was with the  publication’s advertising department, who had the idea that a food column could provide a good informative balance to the usual contents of the magazine. They needed someone who actually went to wet markets, not minding getting her feet dirty, someone who cooked and who could write. Humbly that was us!

Going to market was natural to us, we have been trained early for that. Food has been and is a family passion. It was then right up our alley.

While we aimed to help, we were in turn assisted  by the women and men in the course of our pursuit. We are proud to say that we have discovered some entrepreneurs who have successfully found their niche in the industry. One outstanding lady is Rowena who, years ago, came to our house, asking us to sample her tarts. The rest is history, as Rowena’s Tarts has expanded by leaps and bounds.

We saw the birth of hypermarts and superstores, which are now part of a homemaker’s lifestyle. We marveled at how much variety of international cuisine has developed our taste for different types of food. We continue to enjoy promos and discounted prices. And of course, the availability of imported and premium foodstuff.

We are delighted that some homemakers have taken up profitable home endeavors like baking and producing special food to sell. Happily, we made some personal friends and found interested readers through the years.

Sadly, we also witnessed how prices have escalated. But that is progress, right?  And oh!  the “humble housewife” has risen to a higher, much more esteemed place in the family ladder. Carry on, ladies!!!

Happy 32nd anniversary, Philippine STAR!
