Philippine Pavillion shines at Paris trade fair
The Philippine Pavilion designed by Antonio R. Mendoza was well received at the 30th year of Maison & Objet (meaning “home and object”) in Paris, France.
A ceremonial ribbon was cut on opening day by CITEM executive director Edward Fereira, Philippine Ambassador to France Junever Mahilum-West, noted fashion designer Josie Natori, and Mendoza for the opening of the Philippine Pavilion.
The five-day event ended last Jan. 22 and The Philippine STAR was present to cover the event. The other show takes place from Sept. 5 to 9 this year.
Regarded as a major trade event in Europe, Maison & Objet has brought attention to Philippine-made design and lifestyle products into the European market. Design Philippines brought together 15 companies to showcase Filipino craftsmanship at Maison & Objet 2024. Spearheaded by the Center for International Trade Expositions and Missions (CITEM), the Design Philippines Pavilion showcased pieces from participating companies.
The Philippine pavilion, called “Artipelago,” was curated by Mendoza of Galerie d’Antoine with the cooperation of DF Art Agency. They showcased proudly Philippine-made products from JB Woodcraft, Finali Furniture, South Sea Veneer, A. Garcia, Weavemanila, Jireh Forge, Venzon Lighting & Objects, Indigenous, Zarate Manila, Mejore, Aerostone, Nature’s Legacy, Tadeco, and Vito Selma.
For the first time, Filipino artworks were included, together with furniture and accessories. Artworks by Filipino artists Dino Gabito, Arce, Marrie Saplad, Pongbayog, Jana Benitez, Jigger Cruz, Manny Garibay, Cedrick Dela Paz, Arnold Lalongisip, Ciron Seneres, Chino Yulo, Mark Copino, Bryan Teves, and Demi Padua were admired by visitors. Gabito, Yulo, and Padua flew to Paris for the event.
Aligned with the Office of the First Lady Liza Marcos’s commitment to promote Filipino art and design, she wrote the foreword of the catalog, stating in part that “In the tapestry of global expression, the Philippines stands as a vibrant canvas, adorned with the creativity and diversity of its artists who draw inspiration from the unique blend of traditions and stories that define this archipelago. Promoting Filipino art is not merely an act of showcasing talent, but rather a celebration of a cultural heritage that transcends borders. This endeavor affirms the profound impact that art can have in bridging gaps and fostering unity. In this exhibit, let us recognize the power of visual art to challenge perspectives, ignite conversations, and forge connections. Let us elevate the voices of our artists who contribute to a more inclusive and diverse global community. Through their narrative, we gain insights into the nuances of Filipino life, history, and aspirations, instilling a deeper appreciation for the beauty that emanates from our remarkable country. Congratulations to Galerie D’Antoine and DF Art Agency for bringing the spotlight to Filipino artists through this gorgeous exhibit.”
The trade exhibit in the Parc des Expositions Paris Nord Villepinte was huge, comprised of eight warehouses!
The Philippine Pavilion was a very popular one! But the most visited booth was by Baccarat. The French crystal company, which celebrates their 260th anniversary, tied up with Maison & Objet and presented an immersive short film on the creation of their products projected on three walls of a room, which made it a favorite in the trade show.
The Philippine participation at Maison & Objet 2024 was in partnership with the DTI Competitiveness and Innovation Group and was supported by the Foreign Trade Services Corps, as well as Philippine embassies and consulates in Europe. I am proud to say that it was a success and Filipino design and art was very popular during the trade fair!
