WATCH: Why airport authorities stop ramp operations

MANILA, Philippines — The Manila Airport International Airport recently released a videographic explaining why they occasionally suspend flight and ground operations.

“Lightning strikes can kill,” it said, adding that they just want to save lives.

PAGASA issues lightning alerts from time to time depending on thunderstorms that pose threats to airport operations. MIAA temporarily suspends operations due to this, causing flight delays.

“The red lightning alert is a safety measure taken to prevent untoward incident from happening when lightning is prevalent in the immediate area and may endanger personnel passenger and even flight operations," MIAA explained.

Airport authorities assured the public that it promptly announces ramp movement suspensions.

MIAA advised passengers to check the airline website for flight advisories or call NAIA Flight Information of Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminals to verify flight cancellations. —Rosette Adel
