WATCH: Protesters burn ‘DuterTRAIN’ effigy on SONA day
MANILA, Philippines — Demonstrators from various opposition groups burned the “DuterTRAIN” effigy at Commonwealth Avenue Monday to protest the government’s Tax Reform Acceleration and Reform law and other policies.
The “DuterTRAIN” effigy depicted the alleged extrajudicial killings linked with the administration’s drug war as shown by the pile of dead bodies in the background.
According to groups who joined the United People’s SONA, the tax reform law has worsened the situation of Filipinos.
It also illustrates social issues such as contractualization, charter change, landlessness and supposed intervention by the United States and China.
The protesters burned the effigy when President Rodrigo Duterte was delivering his speech at the House of Representatives.
Around 15,000 individuals were present at the event, which is dubbed as the biggest gathering of opposition groups against Duterte.
