Let the people hear all sides
Banning or taking down websites of suspect individuals or groups is not the way to fight terrorism. Neither is banning books which, like the websites, are perceived to be “leftist.” Unless these actually incite violence or call for overthrow of government, doing so actually does more harm than good, as it infringes on basic rights – freedom of expression chief among them – and damages the way of life we hold sacred.
Monitor these websites, sure; keeping an eye on these and other websites and forums is part of intelligence gathering. But we must have a free exchange of ideas, our people must be able to hear all sides, and to express their views. What authorities must do is not silence the “other side” but work harder at getting their voices and views out there, to compete in the marketplace of ideas. And win the hearts and minds of our people with your message, not by making them blind and deaf by silencing every other voice. – William Noel Jr., Quezon City
