Decency, integrity, honor

The Philippine Star

Accolades poured in when the country’s 15th president passed away last June 24. But of all the words that flooded traditional and social media, the most used were the three words – decency, integrity, honor.

From a distance (for I never met him), as one of his “bosses” – citizen and taxpayer – I think the three words very aptly describe Benigno Aquino III – as does his nickname PNoy – President Noy, Pinoy.

As election fever rolls in amid the pandemic and a more virulent variant threatening our well-being, how I wish we will have candidates who we can describe with those three words! Not jokesters, not trapos, not epals, not power hungry wannabes, not dynasts determined to hang on just to preserve power, privilege and purse.

We have a long, hard climb back to a “normal” life, back to jobs for our workers and a chance anew for dignity of an honest living, food on the table for families and proper education for our youth. We cannot afford to get more of the same, since the same have so far failed us miserably. I hope we will have candidates with decency, integrity and honor – and it is our duty as citizens to go out and vote them into government. – Mario Ch. Vargas, Makati City
