VCO as medical therapy

The Philippine Star

I am not so impressed with the reports of Dr. Imelda Agdeppa, assistant secretary and DOST-FNRI officer-in-charge in Sta. Rosa, Laguna about the 100 percent recovery of 47 individuals involved in the clinical trials using virgin coconut oil (VCO) for asymptomatic and mild cases of COVID-19 infection. We all know that 98 percent of SARS-CoVid-2 infections are of the mild type and need not be hospitalized and only two percent are the critical and serious patients who need absolute hospitalization because most of them are in respiratory distress. In mild cases, you can give VCO, lagundi, tawa-tawa and quinine, no mortality is expected. Only quinine has serious side effects, causing irregular heart beat, a caution to those with heart disease.

Some anecdotal reports have arisen that VCO was used for treating and extending the life of patients with colon malignancy, Stage 1 and 2, and who refused to undergo chemotherapy.

VCO has been studied in our country for several years for its anti-viral and anti-cancer properties, but sad to say, no definite data had been published to prove such claims. I am still hoping our medical and scientific researchers go on with their work until we are able to finally reach a point that we know where and when to use VCO as an agent of medical therapy. – Eliseo Reblando, medical officer, Subic Water Clinic, Subic Bay Freeport
