MANILA, Philippines — More than 300 schools are still being used as evacuation centers of those who have fled their homes due to the ongoing unrest of Taal Volcano.

Latest data from the Department of Education (DepEd) showed that 312 schools, mostly in Batangas, are still being used as evacuation centers as of Wednesday.

The said schools cater to an estimated 20,165 families composed of over 75,000 individuals.

Among those who are currently staying at evacuation centers were 10,969 learners from Batangas, Cavite and Laguna.

Classes remain suspended in Batangas as Taal Volcano remains under Alert Level 4, meaning an explosive hazardous eruption is possible within hours or days.

Earlier, Education Secretary Leonor Briones called for the construction of temporary shelters where evacuees may be transferred to enable the resumption of classes.

She also issued guidelines directing public schools nationwide to accept emergency transfers of students from affected areas even with the unavailability or insufficiency of the required transfer credentials.

Briones also directed school division offices to deploy available personnel to evacuation centers to conduct an inventory of school-age children and facilitate their endorsement to receiving schools or organizations.
