The 5th ASEAN-China Media Week

ROSES AND THORNS - Pia Roces Morato - The Philippine Star

2019 was the ASEAN-China year for media exchanges. In the same year, the ASEAN-China TV Week was held and then subsequently rotated in China as well as ASEAN countries every year, enjoining competent media authorities of ASEAN countries to co-host.

The ASEAN-China Media Week has as its goal to create a mechanism platform for interconnection and mutual learning in the media field through joint production, mutual translation and broadcasting, selection and promotion, exhibition trading, technical seminars, academic research and talent training.

Since 2019, the ASEAN-China Media Week has been held for four consecutive sessions and has in turn achieved high-yielding results in promoting content production, copyright trading and technical exchanges between China and ASEAN countries. In 2022, the 4th ASEAN-China Media Week was co-sponsored by the National Radio and Television Administration of China, the Ministry of Information of Cambodia and the People’s Government of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region of China.

The year 2023 then marks the 10th anniversary of the establishment of the comprehensive strategic partnership between China and Indonesia, with Indonesia also being the rotating presidency of ASEAN. Therefore, in order to further deepen cultural exchange between China and ASEAN countries, Indonesian media authorities have planned to co-host the 5th ASEAN-China Media Week in September 2023 together with the National Radio and Television Administration of China, pertinent competent authorities of Indonesia and the People’s Government of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region of China, with the opening ceremony in Jakarta, Indonesia and the closing ceremony in Nanning, Guangxi, China.

The ASEAN-China Youth Hosts Camp (Season III) consists of impressive young people from both sides invited to the cities of China and ASEAN countries that will show results of friendly cooperation through live webcasts and short video creations. In this year’s camp, four stations have been arranged with Guilin, Guangxi, China as the first stop; Guangzhou, Guangdong as its second stop; Jakarta, Indonesia as its third stop and lastly, its fourth stop being in Hanoi, Vietnam.

Excellent audio-visual programs of China and ASEAN countries will be dubbed and screened in China, Indonesia and other countries. A short video contest of ASEAN-China friendship and cooperation will transpire between September to December through screening of selected videos.

On my end, and for the rest of the delegates, it was certainly nice to have participated in the opening of the 5th ASEAN-China Youth Hosts Camp (Season Three), together with my co-delegates from the Philippines. As I said in my speech at the event, interconnectivity among nations has proven to be so important as our collective efforts allow us to empower ourselves and our communities and, by doing so, we are able to provide more opportunities and diverse platforms for our youth who will in turn pass on what they have learned in order to achieve the innovative changes necessary for us in the region and around the globe.
