Holding time as we could

ESSENCE - Ligaya Rabago-Visaya - The Freeman

After I turn 65, I will stop teaching. It was difficult to say no because it would only be a few more months before I officially said goodbye to the university where I spent the previous 40 years, first as a high school teacher and then as a college professor, because my birthday falls after the start of the school semester, it becomes an extended teaching career.

As this year ends, many memories have come flooding back, including those of my long-time colleagues. While some of them stayed just a short while, others remained for several years, frequently up until retirement. Some of them stopped and split up, while others settled down permanently and brought their families with them. In addition, some of my students have already achieved remarkable success as professionals in a variety of fields of study, both locally and internationally.

Both colleagues and students made an impression on my mind and emotions. They have had such a huge role in who I have become. Since they become what they had imagined in the past, I have no trouble remembering them, especially those amazing moments from when they were students. Although there have been both little and large reunions in the past, the memories are priceless and should be preserved.

We frequently have the desire to halt time's progress. Particularly when they have created so many recollections in our senses, we may want to hold back some of the memories that have been left behind. However, this is just dreaming because we have no influence over how time will unfold. All we need to do is accept how time works naturally.

Memories are a particularly important part of our lives and make us who we are. However, they can also be quite fickle and fleeting. Even the memories of big events can deteriorate over time if not properly tended to. Therefore, it is so important to preserve our memories. Without preserving our memories, even the most important moments in our lives will begin to fade over time. Luckily, between photo albums and time capsules, there are plenty of wonderful ways to preserve our most precious memories for all eternity.

Culture is a mysterious phenomenon that evolves and modifies with each new generation. In many families, culture also plays a considerable influence. As a result, keeping our memories alive has cultural as well as emotional importance. Old pictures of our ancestors help us remember how our culture has changed over time and how important it is to preserve our heritage. These images and films could shed light on the customary attire, food, music, and festivals. It helps us to more clearly see how the cultural expression of our family has changed over time. We may even find some customs that have since been abandoned when we look back at old pictures and recordings. Reviving these customs is a wonderful way to maintain our culture.

We frequently find it difficult to let go of things that are particularly important to us, yet learning to let go is a necessary skill for healing.
