The wonders of debates

As of writing I'm catching up on the debates that occurred over the weekend for both the aspiring presidents and vice presidents of our country. It amuses me that the majority of these individuals who want to vie for the highest position in the land have done their homework well. This means they have researched on the different issues hounding the country on top of their plans and platforms. I understand it isn’t an easy feat and whoever win will have a big role.

Right now, our country is grappling with economic problems as it continues to weaken day by day. Apart from what’s going on in the world market, we are not progressing as much as we think we did. The pandemic has hit our economy hard, most especially those in the small business sector, which in turn lessens the people’s purchasing power. This translates to bad numbers from economists trying to keep our country afloat.

Our leader for the next six years should not just only focus on pandemic response as we are already nearing the end. The attention should shift to the uplifting of the different sectors that have been affected. Today, we see the tourism industry slowly rising as well as the service industry. We want to see the others up and about. Those sectors that didn’t qualify as essential must work double time now and it would help if the next leader focuses on that. When this will be in place, this will aid the economy.

Debates allow us to see the potential of candidates. The Commission on Elections had to throw shade at the candidates who refused to join their debate because they missed the opportunity to present themselves on a bigger platform. These candidates owe the people their vote and it is their responsibility to tell them what they have up their sleeve for the succeeding years.

The debates will continue until next month to present another opportunity for these candidates. Like I have seen previously, it will bring thrills and chills as these events unfold. I still hope that all the aspirants come to their senses and bring themselves before the people. Yes, they can campaign with smiles, waves, and selfies wherever they go but it doesn’t translate to concrete plans. Although we know plans will never come to reality unless done, it is better to have something than nothing. When we end up with nothing at all, we are in it for six dark years. Maybe darker than we are in now.
