No vaxx, no ride?

VERBAL VARIETY - Annie Fe Perez - The Freeman

Cebu Governor Gwen Garcia was stern when she said that the province would not adapt to the no vaccination, no ride scheme that the Department of Transportation is implementing at the National Capital Region. Garcia said the whole scheme is anti-poor which disrespects the individual’s right to choose not to be vaccinated. This creates a polarizing effect among those who up until today have not decided yet what to do with this whole pandemic.

Since I believe in science, I think vaccination is really the way to curb the spread of critical COVID-19 cases. Yet for those who have yet to make a decision or have strong belief in their religion, I agree with the governor when it comes to respect. After all, this world will be a harmonious place to live in if we all respect one another.

The national government argued that they have the right to regulate the movement of unvaccinated individuals because we are in a public health crisis. However, the right to public transport does not cover this movement which is almost similar to crippling a person. What could possibly happen if they would force it upon us could be dangerous.

One, these individuals might be forced to walk since they will not be allowed to ride. Isn’t that more hazardous than just letting them get on a vehicle? Two, it will become an opportunity for the black market in the transport industry to thrive such as vans and other vehicles that do not have permits. Of course, the infamous ‘habal-habal’ or motorcycle taxi which has no regulations might also take advantage by asking for ridiculous rates. Lastly, there will be an artificial demand for private vehicles, motorcycles, and bikes alike.

I do understand the need to encourage vaccination so we can achieve herd immunity but it does not have to reach a point where one is pushed to the wall by not having a choice. Let the unbelievers look at the ill-effects of not being vaccinated. The numbers, deaths, and the entire situation would already warrant a good case for them to believe.

The sad part about this is that we are nowhere near the end. COVID-19 is expected to mutate into different other variants. The wisest thing one can do now is to get protected. We can convince others to join the cause but not curtail them of the privileges and rights they are entitled to.

If the national government insists and mocks our governor, I’d still stand by her. Imagine the hassle of jeepney drivers having to check the vaccination cards while focusing on driving and collecting fare.
