COVID-19 growth rate in NCR drops – OCTA
MANILA, Philippines — Metro Manila’s COVID-19 growth rate decreased to two percent in the past seven days, the OCTA Research Group reported yesterday.
OCTA fellow Guido David, however, said the drop in virus reproduction number may be due to two reasons: cases of COVID-19 might be peaking, or not enough testing is being done.
OCTA said the National Capital Region (NCR) registered 18,422 new COVID-19 cases on Jan. 15, placing the average seven-day growth rate at two percent compared to three percent on Jan. 14.
David said the decrease in growth rate could have two possibilities: the trend of new COVID-19 cases in the NCR is close to the peak or the infections are limited by the testing capacity.
“The volume of testing is not sufficient given the number of COVID-19 cases,” he explained.
David said if cases of COVID-19 in Metro Manila start to decrease next week, there is a possibility that cases have peaked.
“In the second scenario, we will see the number of new COVID cases continue to hover around the same level until the downward trend happens. We will know soon enough,” David said.
