Quiet moves

ROSES AND THORNS - Pia Roces Morato - The Philippine Star

They say that silent moves have loud results. The game of chess teaches us that when we find ourselves surrounded by noise, it’s time to keep still and observe. A quiet chess move doesn’t really look like anything significant; however, it is said to have a large impact on the entire game. In high tactical situations, it is more common for each movement to involve threat, counter threat or even defense and very rarely, according to some experts, it is possible to use a certain “pulse” in something described as different such as a quiet move.

A move that does not immediately do anything major and the cleverest one at that is not done impatiently. The game of chess is very unpredictable and anyone can win or lose at any moment. Strategy is very important when it comes to this game, as it enables one to build on your plan without letting your opponent know your next move. There is art in the game of chess, just as there is art in war and the most beautiful chess move is one that transforms the position.

Mikhail Tal, also known as Misha, was a Soviet Latvian chess player and is considered to be one of the most creative chess players of all time – genius in fact. Mikhail’s playing style was known for improvisation and unpredictability and for him every game was, and I quote, “inimitable and invaluable as a poem.”

Misha is regarded as “The Magician from Riga.” Tal was also a highly respected chess writer who said, “Quiet moves often make a stronger impression than a wild combination with heavy sacrifices.”

The game of chess can teach us many things about life and one of the most important things to learn is that silent moves preserve what is meant for you. There is a multitude of things that can be achieved through silence, while noise on the other hand may just interrupt your ability to wait in patience.

When trying to move silently, get rid of noise makers and always scope out your path ahead of time – just like a beautiful chess game that plans ahead. Quiet moves entail precision and silence has a purpose.

The game of chess requires patience and a certain level of respect for your opponent and sometimes, special chess moves require one to be noiseless.

The game of chess teaches us one thing and that is the ability to learn how to analyze a situation by focusing on important components that eliminate distraction and, in order for us to devise creative solutions and put a plan into action, we must learn to give substance to quiet moves. It simply runs deep.
