Too early yet so far

Before May ended, talks about political parties and possible names were being considered or floated for the incoming national elections next year. Indeed, political groups have started to float some viable contenders. And much to the consideration of these politicians is that they have shown quite a certain level of popularity of either from the start of their political journey or have shown impressive performance during the pandemic specifically on how they have mobilized their resources so as to respond efficiently and effectively. But when can we really say that such talks are too soon, or just enough for next year’s elections?

But the truth is ever since such preparation for those wanting to be elected is just right especially for national elections where voting public needs to have cultivated a positive regard toward a candidate. And for the candidates to start positioning in order to create a space for voters’ consciousness. But this is just fine, after all, others would even take a long decade of creating strong base of following.

And so this brings to the idea that for a true servant of the people would take years of honest and consistent manifestation of genuine and dedicated service. But there is also a valid observation that we Filipinos have short memory. We have the tendency to forget what others have done to us, even if they hurt or disappoint us. And so for others, a year leading to the election is so critical and believe that it is just enough to build a strong presence translating to votes come election day.

However given this situation that we are experiencing the pandemic, this makes a whole new experience that for those planning to run next year may this year be an opportunity to show that the are seriously for the service of others, and that instead of taking positions and parties, think of what else they can do for others, especially those badly affected by the pandemic.

The real test of leadership does not occur when everything is smooth-sailing. Rather, leadership is oftentimes tested during a crisis. The way a leader behaves and acts during a crisis will establish their credentials as a good leader or a poor one.

Because emergencies are so unpredictable, leaders frequently don't have enough time to prepare. It's pretty much a make or break issue. Furthermore, there is no way of knowing how long a crisis will last. The time span can be anything from a few days to several years.

We have leaders who are consumed and overwhelmed with being first in line to help, rather than worrying about how to put themselves in the greatest possible winning position by aligning or realigning with political parties. They may have won the hearts of a handful of their fellow party members, but not the hearts of many Filipinos.

We can only hope that our leaders' actual goals are to serve others and achieve something beneficial to them. It also speeds up the completion of that aim. After all, we want to be a part of something that has a positive impact on society.
