Breach of protocol

Is it a show of power or simply a case of ignorance about what should be done? This is a basic but important question for those government officials who, despite the protocol that the first batch of vaccines should be provided to our medical frontline personnel, have managed to show the entire Filipino population that they have been vaccinated as well. And if the aim is to boost our confidence, the medical frontlines are more than capable of doing so.

This is particularly true given the scarcity of vaccines, which prompted the government to devise a prioritization system. So, what's the point of this scheme if these officials are just going to ignore it? This is so clear that even a layperson can understand it.

The social strata in a society allow those with power to exert control on something that benefits them. Such power is used to gain access to something or to be the first to wield it, and if that isn't possible, to find a way to get anything in their hands. If used to the detriment of some, even of many, the effect from where the seat of power can be detrimental. And the life or survival of many parts of society is jeopardized as a result of the greed of a few.

Indeed, those in positions of power and authority can easily manipulate the guidelines or rules to their benefit, due to a system of entitlement for the fortunate few, but which is also disadvantageous to the vulnerable who are supposed to be served and prioritized.

And if we allow this to happen again, we are encouraging them to sacrifice the interests of those who really need it the most, as well as enabling it to become normal, allowing it to recur and become part of a chronic phenomenon. And, in order to put an end to it, it must come from the top. If we have strong and definitive leadership like one that aims to end the use of illegal drugs then why can’t we do in simple matters like following the protocols?

In every democratic society, the rule of law is the most critical component. Our country is built on the rule of law, and citizens must have confidence that our government officials can apply the law equally. There have already been cases of politicians violating health protocols during the pandemic. Our leaders, who are supposed to be role models, are instead the ones who are violating the rules. And if our leaders who are supposed to set the example are the ones who violate instead, then what else do we call it but simply abuse of power. End of discussion.
