COVID casualty
My friend’s mom died in the United States due to heart complications, but what finished her off was her COVID-19 infection. Nobody knew how and why she contracted the virus in a home where they were careful not to transmit it to anybody. But who could she blame? In the US, a majority of the individuals don’t believe in the virus and even refuse to wear masks. In her frustration, she vowed to make everyone wear one, even if she had to shove the mask up their noses.
Countries in across the globe are taking their lockdowns to a higher level only because the already-flattened curve surged once again. It is because people became too complacent after the situation has calmed down. They are going back to square one, and reaping the effects of negligence. Seems like the virus has won once again.
Every time I think about what happened to my friend’s mom (whom I have also grown fond of), I can’t help but also think about the many lives that were taken by COVID. There were many people from the entertainment industry, business, and politics that have left too early because of the virus. Had we been very careful, there would have been less deaths.
The clinical trials of the vaccines are showing good efficacy rates. But the question is when will we have these in our country? What’s sad is the president’s announcement that only those in the frontline will be first to have this vaccine. However, those vulnerable but with no status or money will just have to wait. I could only guess how they will be prioritized.
Everyone wants the vaccine to this virus to arrive, but the sad news is it’s taking time. It seems like the stalling is making the whole world very impatient. Getting impatient and trying to get away of the rules makes the situation worse. Cebu City is now crafting new guidelines for gatherings this Christmas. I doubt if it could be implemented.
2020 has been too much for me in many ways. The virus has just robbed me of so many beautiful travels, road trips, and family time. Now we are basically starting from scratch; only inviting home those who belong to our family. But I have to thank the men and women behind the city and town halls of this province for moving forward despite the numerous failures.
I continue to pray for Tita Gelia, the mom of my friend who died of COVID. It can happen to us too. We should take extra precaution, listen to the officials and stop demanding for everything we used to do. 2020 may be a bad year, but we have to get through it well.
