A circus

VERBAL VARIETY - Annie Fe Perez - The Freeman

I laughed when the news broke out; two congressmen are fighting over the seat to be the next House speaker. What’s new? I asked. It seems like a very scripted drama of the House of Representatives, a body supposedly elected duly by the people to represent their sector’s interests parties and specific districts. But that isn’t the case today as we have seen how the president became so vocal in asking for the Congress’ favor to have his way. It is eminent in his speeches that Congress will pave the way for many of his wishes in drafting policies for this country.

I believe congressmen are supposed to lobby to the House whatever they deem is necessary as said by their constituents. Once, after the closure of ABS-CBN in Cebu I received a phone call from one of the congressman who voted no to a fresh a 25-year franchise. He said he was sorry because the majority vote was something talked and agreed upon. Whether or not this is true, the pain just kept on coming back again and again. It made me question the credibility of the representatives that we have. Also, it would make me wonder if they are all worth the vote now I don’t think so.

Who in their right mind would use their own birthdays as an excuse to decide on who I should lord over the speakership in the House? Why are infamous occasions such as birthdays being used as a basis to come up with a good style of leader ship in the way we govern? I think it has been too personal and many powerful hands have been meddling in this circus of a legislative body. No matter how hard the Palace would say that their leader is neutral, reality doesn’t say so and I think the Filipinos aren’t dumb enough to believe such.

I’m tired of the circus that they are putting out; the show isn’t worth any peso at all, not even worth a vote. I think it’s time that we make use of whatever opportunity we have to line up at the Commission on Elections to be a registered voters so we can change the landscape of our governance in the next election. However we can only achieve this if we the educated sector could also reach out to those who are not as privileged among us by teaching them who are the right people to be in position. We need leaders of competence, and not skilled actors and actresses who can’t put up a good show in front of the media.

So I’d rather put my newsfeed to mute and not listen to the radio or television about the issue on the speakership. I rather wait until these supposedly brilliant man and women discuss the budget for the country, noting that our economy has been bleeding because of this pandemic. To borrow the famous adage of America “God bless the Philippines.”
