Hope in the frontlines of uncertainty

ROSES AND THORNS - Pia Roces Morato - The Philippine Star

Uncertainty indeed is the most stressful feeling. As a frontliner waking up day in and day out, this pandemic has hit me hard. It feels like a dream or like the movie Groundhog Day where you’re just waiting for things to end.

My experiences in the last few weeks however has been a great teacher to me. I’m learning a lot more about humility – you know, the painful kind, the one where you want to just retaliate but start thinking about. And as they say , “what Jesus would do.”

It’s the Holy Week and although I usually spend this quietly with my family, this year is different. This year, just like many other frontliners who cannot go home, I am spending this time in solitude. There are seeds of wisdom in hard times and although one would much rather overlook these, such seeds are there to help us bear fruit in the future.

We may not understand fully our life’s circumstances yet, we are waking up to this, day after day, with hope. I have never hoped so much in my life than in the past few weeks and I am learning exactly what it means to be anchored in hope.

We learn that faith says it is so now while hope says in the future, it could happen. While faith and hope are connected, we must understand that one cannot have hope without faith.

We really do get a good beating in the hardest of times -– criticism, name calling, ridiculing all happened to the strongest man I know and He died for us on the cross because it was His hope that we be saved.

With this is mind I remind myself to take a step back, hoping that what we are all praying for in the future will happen. Hope is seeing light despite the darkness. May this Holy Week be a time of reflection for us and May we be filled with Hope knowing that our God is an able God.
