Dear God

PERSPECTIVE - Cherry Piquero-Ballescas - The Freeman

Many frontliners, here and abroad, have given up their lives to serve those afflicted by Covid-19, dear God. Doctors, health workers, priests, and more. We are losing other virus victims too, day by day. Such a big, big loss for humankind. Such profound grief and sadness for their loved ones.

Through our tears, to You Lord, we lift them all. May they now rest and be at peace with You eternally back in Your heavenly home!

The cases affected by the virus continue to increase globally, Lord. The number of deaths is yet more than those who recover. Until when will this pandemic last, Lord? When will we see Your healing grace?

We recall and claim Psalm 30:5 at this moment, Lord: “( Your) anger lasts but a moment, (Your) favour through life; In the evening come tears, but with dawn cries of joy.”

Oh Lord, let your dawn come soonest so, like David, we will sing the rest of Psalm 30:

“1 I praise you to the heights, Yahweh, for you have raised me up, you have not let my foes make merry over me. 2 Yahweh, my God, I cried to you for help and you healed me. 3 Yahweh, you have lifted me out of Sheol, from among those who sink into oblivion you have given me life. 4 Make music for Yahweh, all you who are faithful to him, praise his unforgettable holiness.”

Dear God, may we remember that Psalm 30:5 (which we reiterate notes that “His anger lasts but a moment, his favour through life; In the evening come tears, but with dawn cries of joy”) is preceded by those 4 earlier verses that proclaim praise to You for not allowing our foes to defeat us, for Your healing, for giving us life and therefore we, the faithful, will make music and praise Your unforgettable holiness!”

The following verses after Psalm 30:5 allow us, however, dear God, to reflect on our cry for mercy to You now that we are terrified:

“6 Carefree, I used to think, 'Nothing can ever shake me!' 7 Your favour, Yahweh, set me on impregnable heights, but you turned away your face and I was terrified. 8 To you, Yahweh, I call, to my God I cry for mercy. 9 What point is there in my death, my going down to the abyss? Can the dust praise you or proclaim your faithfulness? 10 Listen, Yahweh, take pity on me, Yahweh, be my help!”

Our dear God, please listen to our cry, have pity on us, be our help!

Lord, we praise You and claim the power and joy from You mentioned in other verses of Psalm 30: “11 You have turned my mourning into dancing, you have stripped off my sackcloth and clothed me with joy. 12 So my heart will sing to you unceasingly, Yahweh, my God, I shall praise you for ever!”.

Although afraid, Lord, we leap in faith that this present pandemic will not last, that this too will pass, in Your time, in Your way. Then the whole world will proclaim even more Your power and sing praise to You for Your mercy and healing for us, for our world.

While difficult within this present crisis, we continue to sing and praise You, dear God, for we believe that You love and care for us best and know what is best for us all.

Please continue to be with all of us in this period of darkness and fear for who else can we turn to but You, dear God?

Increase our faith to believe that Your deliverance and joy will come tomorrow! Thank You, our dear God. Amen.
