Journalists upheld

VERBAL VARIETY - Annie Perez - The Freeman

To say that the Philippines is now a safe haven for journalists might still be an understatement, after the court ruled on its decision on the Maguindanao massacre. This was the bloody event that killed 58 people, journalists included. It was a disaster waiting to unfold as a rival political entity in the guise of the Mangudadatus wanted to overthrow the Ampatuans from power by running against them in politics, but instead the massacre happened. Ten years later, the decision was made. Although not all were convicted and some were acquitted, the major players in the crime were given life sentences.

Ten years ago, I was a high school student and aspiring journalist. There was so much excitement in me that when the news broke out about the massacre, I said I was willing to put my other foot inside the grave for this job I wanted. Today, I realized that it isn't worth it, especially in this day and age. The best time for every reporter to do one's job is in this era where we always have to keep our head down, or else we will risk being persecuted by individuals and powerful entities. The essence of being a journalist has slowly diminished to being a puppet of agencies that release their press kits in time for a deadline. But deep down there is still an inkling of pure-blooded news persons who use their skill and ability for the job.

We need fierce journalists today who are willing to stand for what is right, by being the literal watchdog of the government without fear. This is a very challenging thing to do but it is worth doing. Today is a different arena, we are faced with fake news that goes viral in seconds when posted in social media pages. The challenge is to let people rethink the kind of media they consume. What they should see and hear are those that are truthful and useful for them.

With the recent decision of the Ampatuan case, it may shine a bright light on the young journalists today on how they should do their jobs. Or, it will make them leave the industry for a better job. Sure, it is so easy to choose the path with more money and less hassle but the fulfillment of the heart is different when you are able to serve the public with the information spread through proper channels. The discussion is long on how the news should be portrayed today, but one thing is for sure - it must always uphold honesty and dignity.

As I continue with my daily dealings in my job as a reporter, it will be a struggle to be on guard for the wrongdoings of the government and other individuals. It will also be an honor to be the fortress of those who need help. Ultimately, we must not forget the creed of giving a public service above all else, with the right channels in place.
