Unwrapped gift

ESSENCE - Ligaya Rabago-Visaya - The Freeman

A common, and perhaps the most anticipated, activity to some during this season is the exchanging of gifts. Many have known their manitas or manitos weeks or months back as they already have raffled off their names. Thus, they know already the gender or even the items wanted received by their manitas/manitos on the actual day.

While others would wish to receive something they can use daily, others also would want that which they can use frequently like kitchen wares, office items, and many more. And what makes it more suspenseful is when identities are unknown and revealed only on the day itself. There is pressure, especially when one is engrossed with whether the recipient would like the purchased item.

The gifts sought sometimes depend on the needs and personality of the recipient, and so one who is spiritual would be grateful to receive l a rosary or even a bible. And for those who are into sports, a ball or a racket for badminton would be most welcome.

One of the best feelings in the world is giving. Such positive energy is contagious. With just one act of kindness, we can inspire others to go out and plant seeds of happiness. Our greatest gift is the ability to share our blessings; it's what makes life meaningful.

It is worth remembering that after all the happiest people are not those getting more, but those giving more. Because it is in giving that happiness is derived from those who have less in life, the disadvantaged, and the marginalized. And since we get more joy out of giving joy to others, we should put a good deal of thought into the happiness that we are able to give. This supposedly well thought out undertaking is felt by the receiver as he or she knows by the presence of the necessary ingredients such as time and effort.

The cycle should not end. As one receives something, he doesn’t stop after receiving but rather make an opportunity by doing the same to others. And in this way, the gesture of giving has no end.

But there are gift that do not come with price tags. These are gifts that cannot be wrapped. They can be given even without an occasion, anytime and anywhere, with the purest intention and sincerity. Sharing our precious time and concern is such a bliss to those who have been abandoned all throughout in their lives.

It is not the material present that we expect but the enormous blessing from the act of giving and receiving. And such blessing is coming from no other but from our Heavenly Father, the ever source of love, knowledge and wisdom. And can be truly achieved when we give cheerfully and accept gratefully.
