Senior

ESSENCE - Ligaya Rabago-Visaya - The Freeman

Probably feared by others but from the moment I reached my senior year, I have enjoyed the many advantages. Very striking is I have enjoyed the senior citizen discount, akin to a token of gratitude for the seniors’ contribution to the country and family.

Despite the fact that feelings of trepidation will consistently hide around each corner as time begins to negatively affect maturing bodies. What used to be such a basic undertaking to twist around to get a dropped magazine is presently not all that simple. Getting up is never again a matter of essentially sitting up – rather we resort to a greater degree a moving movement to produce the energy important to rise. Strolls around the area become shorter as we may tire all the more effectively. These progressions incur significant damage and can prompt dissatisfaction in seniors who at long last have the opportunity to do what they want however progressively unfit physically.

Everybody is worried about what we eat and doesn't hesitate to chide a little guilty pleasure before the remainder of the world. What's more, at last, if our psychological or physical well-being neglects to the point where we can't securely think about ourselves, others start dialogs and plans for moving us to a retirement home. That regard and freedom that we earned through our life blurs as everyone around us settle on significant life choices for us – to our benefit. The loss of power over our own predetermination can be dampening, best case scenario for senior residents.

The elderly are all too familiar with how frail life is as friends and family members become ill and pass on. What used to be a long list of friends and acquaintances begins to dwindle and increasingly we are left to our own resources to find entertainment and fulfillment in our retirement. The loneliness that results can impact how we invite others into our lives. The idea will always be present that it is not worth the risk letting someone become close when ultimately we will lose them. Seniors may appear solid at first glance but there are highly charged emotions being dealt with just under the surface that impact the ability to cope.

Although frustration, loss of control, insecurity and loneliness can be integral parts of elderly living, the years on earth and the many experiences we have weathered, the highs and the lows we have lived through, all come into play to make us stronger. What does not kill us makes us stronger and at our age, we realize what really matters. We have learned to accept who we are and the changes that aging entails.

Managing change and difficulties is essential to the human condition. Our mentality and perspective along the way can give our lives esteem and bring happiness to the people who matter most.

Because of the great contributions of senior citizens on a global scale, countries have recognized them. The United Nations has even designated October 1 to honor the older people. Dubbed the "International Day of Older Persons," it is a day that recognizes that older persons are an enormous asset to society and make a significant contribution to global development. Japan has "Respect for the Aged Day" which promotes the health of elderly and middle-age people.

Being senior means living a significant life for oneself and for others, which I continue for as long as I live. I have gained respect from the people I have touched. And for others who feel otherwise, I do not ask for respect nor demand from them. But at least I don’t deserve to be maligned.
