Japan

PERSPECTIVE - Cherry Piquero-Ballescas - The Freeman

This country continues to show the world its well-deserved high ranking among the world’s best.

Despite being a small island country, Japan is a shining example of how strong will and discipline can lead to effective, systematic and efficient management of human and natural resources and networks.

Not perfect, of course, but any foreign visitor can observe and witness how well-organized Japan is: its transport network, services, infrastructure and so on.

Millions of daily commuters get to their work on time (even earlier than the formal start of work). Although packed like sardines during rush hours, the Japanese quietly, hurriedly commute from home to work area.

Their transportation system is probably one of the world’s best! The transport companies apologize publicly for even just a minute delay in their schedule! Transport company personnel wait at the gates, bowing apologetically for the delay and handing out small notices that state what time the train was delayed so that students and other commuters can present this to their teachers and employers.

Big hospitals are able to efficiently service thousands of patients per morning! One can hardly see any cleaning crew while at the hospital that is kept clean and comfortable with the public also doing their share for proper waste management!

Hardly a police person is in sight too in the streets! No shouting, no honking of horns, no overtaking almost- every driver seems to patiently follow the traffic rules!

And commuters are prioritized. Cars stop to allow the pedestrians to safely cross the streets- not like here where one has to run for one’s life while crossing the streets!

Courtesy and politeness or some call it mindfulness- Japanese are noted for these qualities. They greet you with bows and irrashaimase (welcome) and doomo arigatoo gozaimasu (thank you very much) at shops, restaurants, inside elevators even.

Next year, Japan will host the XXXII Olympiad, commonly known as Tokyo 2020. Japan prepared for this international event years ahead!

Already a favorite tourist destination previously, more tourists are expected next year! Filipinos will be among them as tourist visas are easier to apply for now because of Tokyo 2020. Not only will they enjoy the games but Japan’s natural and cultural sites as well!

There are waterfalls, forests, lakes, and mountains to marvel at. Of course, majestic Mt. Fuji never fails to impress if one is fortunate enough to see it up close and personal or from inside the shinkansen (bullet train). Flower parks or even just the regular parks mandated within housing areas are worth one’s visit too!

The volume of tourists will peak so best to plan one’s trip to Japan for the 2020 Oympics ahead and carefully. The Japanese, so used to always being ready to be of service to their guests, will just be as prepared or even more for 2020 Olympics!

Japan needed more labor to prepare for the Olympics. With an elderly population and zero population, Japan has been challenged by labor shortage. Still undecided officially to allow foreign workers in or not, unofficial back door recruitment, entry and dispatch of unauthorized foreign workers have also been observed. Reports of abuse and violations of rights have also been documented.

Many Filipinos, actively recruited and dispatched by unofficial, unauthorized brokers, ended up in Japan with problematic travel documents, work terms, and conditions. Please carefully scrutinize offers with enticing high salaries made to you for work in Japan. Make sure the brokers are authorized agents by POEA. Please also watch out for unnecessary and expensive recruitment and language fees, among others.

Please ensure safe, protected travel so you can enjoy Japan!
