The mission and return of the 72 disciples

SHOOTING STRAIGHT - Valeriano Avila - The Freeman

It is now the 14th Sunday in Ordinary time and today’s gospel reading comes from Luke 10:1-12,17-20 that talks about the mission and return of the 72 disciples of our Lord.

1 After this the Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them two by two ahead of him to every town and place where he was about to go. 2 He told them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field. 3 Go! I am sending you out like lambs among wolves. 4 Do not take a purse or bag or sandals; and do not greet anyone on the road.

5 “When you enter a house, first say, ‘Peace to this house.’ 6 If someone who promotes peace is there, your peace will rest on them; if not, it will return to you.7 Stay there, eating and drinking whatever they give you, for the worker deserves his wages. Do not move around from house to house. 8 “When you enter a town and are welcomed, eat what is offered to you. 9 Heal the sick who are there and tell them, ‘The kingdom of God has come near to you.’

10 But when you enter a town and are not welcomed, go into its streets and say, 11 ‘Even the dust of your town we wipe from our feet as a warning to you. Yet be sure of this: The kingdom of God has come near.’ 12 I tell you, it will be more bearable on that day for Sodom than for that town.”

17 The seventy-two returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us in your name!” 18 And he said to them, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. 19 Behold, I have given you authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall hurt you. 20 Nevertheless, do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.”

What we are being taught in today’s gospel reading is what is taught in seminaries for those who want to embrace the priesthood. If this is what the Lord taught his disciples and for this lesson, he appointed 72 disciples to go ahead of him to visit the towns he intended to visit, you will understand that even when our Lord was here on earth, he already felt the need to send his disciples to preach the Good News to those villages he intended to visit.

The orders of our Lord are very clear when he said, “I am sending you out like lambs among wolves. 4 Do not take a purse or bag or sandals; and do not greet anyone on the road.5 “When you enter a house, first say, ‘Peace to this house.’ 6 If someone who promotes peace is there, your peace will rest on them; if not, it will return to you.7 Stay there, eating and drinking whatever they give you, for the worker deserves his wages. Do not move around from house to house. 8 “When you enter a town and are welcomed, eat what is offered to you. 9 Heal the sick who are there and tell them, ‘The kingdom of God has come near to you.’” Indeed, when the disciples enter a house, the person being sent cannot bless the house, but rather it is God’s blessing that comes into that house.

However, for those who didn’t welcome them, our Lord said, “But when you enter a town and are not welcomed, go into its streets and say, 11 ‘Even the dust of your town we wipe from our feet as a warning to you. Yet be sure of this: The kingdom of God has come near.’ 12 I tell you, it will be more bearable on that day for Sodom than for that town.” What a horrible fate to those houses that don’t welcome the disciples, to the point that it is even more bearable for those who suffered in Sodom and Gomorrah. Wow! Strange but true!

Finally, our Lord told the 72 who returned to him, “And he said to them, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. 19 Behold, I have given you authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall hurt you.” Indeed, God’s work gets us divine grace that nothing can disturb those who work for God.
