Engr. Paterno Costanilla, Father of PATCOR Productions

CEBUPEDIA - Clarence Paul Oaminal - The Freeman

Paterno Costanilla son of Posoy Costanilla of Pinamungajan and Iluminada Enriquez of Inayawan, Cebu City, in the 1970’s founded the PATCOR Productions, a music industry based in Cebu.

Engr. Paterno’s PATCOR Productions stands for Paterno and Anacolita, the former’s wife, a member of the Ocampo Clan of Inayawan, Cebu City. Among the many records produced by PATCOR Production is the song “Landong sa Kagahapon.” The song was conceptualized by Engr. Pat Costanilla. It was a story about two lovers where one night the girl confided to her boyfriend that she was about to wed to another boy. The boyfriend attended the wedding and their eyes met after the ceremony.

The concept of Engr. Pat was made into a song by Inocencio “Siux” Kabajar Cabase, one of Cebu’s premier songwriters who composed the song “Balod sa Kalimot” popularized by Pilar Garrido Corrales more popularly known as Pilita Corrales. It was interpreted by the Cebuano singer, Rely Bacalso.

It was also PATCOR Productions that produced “Wa Ka Kyafi”, a colloquial phrase used in the 1970s. Engr. Pat was a product of the CSAT or the Cebu School of Arts and Trades, it is the precursor of today’s Cebu Technological University which was earlier named as Cebu Science College and Science and Technology. He became thereafter a driving instructor, he was also an ambulance driver for Chong Hua Hospital.

Paterno and Anacolita had the following children; Rolando, William, Ramon, Ruth (who married Apollo Delfin, the number one councilor of Barangay Inayawan, Cebu City), Samson (who married Charity Quirante of Dumanjug, Cebu and they have two children who are based in the United States, Samantha and Maricar), Rebecca who married a man named Randleman in the United States and Esther Mae (who married a Cabantan).

Samson, a son of Engr. Pat more known as SamCost, is a very well-known tri-media personality in the Visayas and Mindanao. A pianist (who inherited the oido talent of his father), Samcost is a founding member of the CURTA or the Cebu United Radio and Television Artists. For decades, SamCost was the emcee of the Sinulog Grand Parade, he also became one of the pioneer professors of the Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communication in USJ-R in the 1980s. He also writes for a local newspaper on entertainment and at present co-hosts a radio program with former congressman Tony Cuenco, a councilor-elect of Cebu City’s south district.
