What draws votes?

PERSPECTIVE - Cherry Piquero-Ballescas - The Freeman

Today, there are 53 more days before the May 13, 2019 national and local elections.

At this stage, all candidates are most eager to ensure that they can draw and get the votes they need to win!

What can draw the votes from the voters?

Songs and dances, according to Du30’s senatorial candidates. Crowds will come for entertainment, not debates.

However, does crowd size determine votes? Is it confirmed that those who attend rallies of particular candidates also cast their votes for those candidates? Crowd size, however, can give the impression of support and votes for the candidates. In this age of hakot and money politics, there is no guarantee that those in the crowd are all registered voters and even if they are, if they will finally vote for the candidates who spent money for their transport, allowance, food and other handouts.

Endorsements of significant personalities can draw votes as well, according to some. That is why politicians include singers, TV and movie personalities in their rallies and other campaigns.

Du30 has endorsed several candidates. It is Ocho Deretso (MATH GRAD) for senators for VP Leni.

Many believe survey results may also influence votes. However, again, do opinions expressed and tallied in surveys translate to actual votes? Like the paid trolls dispersed in social media, is it possible, there are also survey respondents all throughout the country paid to give only favorable answers and endorsements for the present administration?

Despite issues raised about opinion surveys, from methodology to reliability, opinion surveys, like crowd size, convey the impression of voter support for the highly ranked candidates. Surveys and crowd size are used by certain candidates to manage impression and to influence voters.

Political machinery and resources help draw votes, as well. Ads, posters, sample ballots and other election paraphernalia (bracelets, shirts, hats, handouts, and more) are expensive but are utilized for candidate visibility and for easy, steady candidate recall during election time.

Filipino voters are reported to cast their votes, finally, for the highest bidder. Many sell their votes for cash or (unfulfilled) promises.

Blinded by immediate cash, Filipino voters restore abusive candidates to power, despite having been charged and proven to have stolen millions of public money intended for jobs, education, health and other welfare services!

Many Filipinos vote because of fear, scared and herded to precinct places by those who abuse political power who resort to coercion to get votes, including the use of guns and goons, before, during, even after elections.

Du30’s team clearly emphasized that honesty is not a requirement for politicians. Many of them are advocating the continuation of or support for this present administration’s projects, programs and policies.

That will include charter change. With a Du30 majority in Congress, prepare to see the shameless push for immediate, automatic extension of their term through Federalism!

With a Du30 majority in Congress, expect pork barrel to balloon, even more now that pork barrel has been restored in the present House of Representatives (HORS)!

Expect continuing non-transparency, no accounting of public funds.

A January 2019 report showed that the government's outstanding debt reached P7.3 trillion in 2018, up from the P6.603 trillion by the end of 2016, during Aquino’s term.

On top of the Marcos’ debt that need to be paid, Filipinos should prepare to pay more Du30 debts, especially to China!. , o!

If Du30 candidates win, expect a massive Chinese victory and takeover of our lands, jobs, our sovereignty, ultimately, our freedom!

Hopefully, more Filipinos will finally vote for those who will genuinely serve our people, our country, and, God.
