Despicable and shameless even at Christmas

PERSPECTIVE - Cherry Piquero-Ballescas - The Freeman

The reason for this Christmas season is clear to most of us - “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.”

While most Filipinos are busy preparing to commemorate the birth of Christ, the despicable and shameless have been stealthily busy protecting, preserving, enriching themselves even this Christmas!

Justices at the SandiganBayan (SB) and the Supreme Court (SC) have acquitted even the guilty who were found to have stolen millions in public funds!

In a 3-2 vote, the SB acquitted Ramon “Bong” Revilla Jr. of criminal charges while ordering Revilla to return P124.5 million to the nation’s coffers! SC Chief Justice Sereno considers that this acquittal “encapsulates the latest legal abomination that has been created in the last two years. It is a dagger stroke to the heart of justice. When law becomes an instrument of injustice, the nation loses its soul.”

The SC also upheld the acquittal of former Ang Galing Pinoy party-list representative Juan Miguel “Mikey’’ Arroyo in a P27.3-million tax evasion case.

In a September 12 resolution released only this week, the high court affirmed the March decision of the Court of Tax Appeals that “dismissed the tax evasion case against the son of former president and now Speaker Gloria Macapagal Arroyo due to insufficiency of evidence.”

The SB has also started transferring the graft cases of convicted Imelda Marcos to the SC.

A post in Facebook captures the present senseless and biased justice system in this country: “Nagnakaw ng de lata, noodles, tsokolate at tinapay, kulong. Nagnakaw ng milyon-milyon, pinalaya!

Not to be outdone and speedily dispensing public funds as if these were private entitlements, ousted Gloria Macapagal Arroyo now speaker of the House of Representatives had directed the allotment of at least P60 million worth of government projects to each House member, according to House Majority Leader Rolando Andaya Jr.

Andaya also asked the DBM to explain the huge alleged insertions (P50 billion for DWPH) in the P3.757-trillion 2019 national budget. Andaya also questioned how only one contractor, without proper qualifications, has been awarded “30 government projects worth billions of pesos before Congress could even approve the national budget for 2019?”

Senator Lacson also exposed that GMA’s Pampanga district will be receiving the biggest pork allocation - P2.4 billion pesos!

Grateful members of the House easily approved the draft constitution, fulfilling GMA’s long-awaited Chacha! Authored by GMA herself with 35 other legislators, this self-serving federalism calls for a new charter that will provide “more benefits for criminal politicians, unlimited terms and allow political dynasties and mafias,” according to a Facebook post.

“Para kanino ba talaga ang Chachang ito?” asked Representative Kit Belmonte.

Neri Colmenares also added that the GMA version will institutionalize the pork barrel system, allow foreign ownership of public utilities, educational institutions, media entities, of land and natural resources, will attack labor rights and remove the right to participate in policy and decision-making and allows unlimited martial law powers for the president. Of importance, the new Chacha deleted the section where the state guarantees full respect for human rights!

What is Duterte doing about all these blatant, despicable, shameless plunder and corruption moves throughout his administration?

Senator Lacson reported P565.76 billion in state fund has been wasted on corruption and incompetence.

A report by the Commission on Audit noted that Duterte’s office spent almost 500% more in 2017 (P15.63 billion) compared to the P3.31 billion spent in 2016. It is even asking for higher budget increase for 2019!

Vigilance, protest, and prayers this Christmas?
