Test of life
Many schools in practically all levels have conducted their first major examinations, be it first grading period or preliminary examination for college level. And so some students have sleepless nights studying their lessons and perhaps for some would just take their preparation lightly for they have grasped the lessons so well. Others, to some extent, would even ask their classmates for group study sessions.
Examinations may be in a paper and pencil type of test or performance-based type of assessment. But all aimed at evaluating what a student has understood for a certain period or coverage. And in most cases, one has to be conscious of the passing percentage for one to pass such major examination based on certain requirements and standards.
The truth is, tests are not the be-all-end-all. During batch reunions, I noticed that some who, in their school years, have different behaviors, have changed their character for good, and achieved so much in life. Although they learned from their experiences in school and inspired by the lessons of their teachers, they have not exhibited positive changes during their school days, but only after they finished schooling.
And what makes it heartwarming is when they recalled their wayward days in school and the many lessons they obtained from. And so their hearts are so filled with gratefulness to their mentors who have provided the basic lessons in life. Life lessons from teachers can have a lasting impact on students, and sharing these can have a far greater impact than teaching standard-based content.
During moments of sharing, some led to recalling life’s basic lessons. For one, it’s no secret that hard work pays off in one’s life. We understand that some students can be exceptionally gifted but, in the end, they too will fail for being too lazy as there is no real substitution for hard work.
We will always lead by example because most of the students are aware that, if they are being respected, they will return the same. This is a valuable lesson to learn from as it enables one to be more humble and simple in nature. It’s imperative that a student understands the meaning of teamwork and the benefits involved. Schools provide this opportunity for them to work together and achieve something.
In decision making, smart decisions are integral to one’s individual development. Teach to weigh out the possibilities because an array of poor decisions can lead to extensive failure. There are many things in this world that are never within our control. There are situations that are out of our control and so we must adapt. Life is dynamic and is constantly changing with changes in situations.
Any teacher would tell their students that they will always have enormous potential to become somebody they desire someday. There is no greater support system here than a teacher who acts as the best morale booster. There may come a time when students may find themselves being odd or that they care about what others think. We convey the message of self-belief, trusting in your instincts, setting goals, and reaching those goals without personal compromise.
It is common to keep making mistakes as they are the best ways to learn. It’s only human to make mistakes, which contribute towards one’s overall personal development, and provide learning opportunities in the end.
The choices and having control of one’s own destiny is true. It is up to us to make a difference by our own choice and free will. We choose the path or destiny we wish to pursue. It’s up to us to shape our future: Whether we choose to embrace their presence or disregard it, we will always be around to provide with the much needed personal touch to learning in life. This is something no amount of textbooks will ever teach us.
