Mandaue City, Cebu

CEBUPEDIA - Clarence Paul Oaminal - The Freeman

The "Brains of the Cebu City Charter," lawyer Gervasio Lira Lavilles, in his book "CEBU: History of its four cities and forty nine municipalities," had this to say about Mandaue: "He also speaks of the place being ruled by a chief called Apanoan. Reinforcing this historical account, two Spanish writers, namely Bosetta and Bravo, also mention in the book 'Diccionario' written by them in 1637-38 that Mandaue was one of the important villages under the charge of the Jesuits. In his book 'Labor Evangelica' written in 1663, another Spanish writer by the name of Colin likewise says that Mandaue, as a village, was under the charge of the College of Cebu established by the Jesuits. According to him the village was ruled by an influential family who had some 40 'tributaries.' The name Mandaue, according to a popular, prevailing tradition, is derived from 'mantawi,' a kind of vine that abundantly grew in all parts of the town in the old days."

A book written by Fr. Felipe Redondo in 1886, "A Brief Survey of What Was and What is the Diocese of Cebu in the Philippine Islands," tells of a first account of the parishes of Cebu. It was only in 2014 that the book was translated into English by Azucena L. Pace. This is how Fr. Felipe made an account of Mandaue:

"Its founding took place during the administration of the Jesuit Fathers, it is under the patronage of St. Joseph. The oldest existing entries in parochial books are dated 1762. Church: of cut coral stone and lime mortar masonry; has an organ, and roofed with tiles; it has a Greek cross configuration and two octagonal-shaped chapels; measures 60 varas long and 12 varas wide in the main nave; those on the sides measure 20 and 8 varas, respectively."

In 1965, these were the officials of Mandaue: Demetrio M. Cortes, mayor; Eriberto S. Dimpas, vice mayor; Cecilio Samson, municipal secretary; Alejando E. Mendoza, judge; Florentino E. Corbo, treasurer, Prescilliao Lumapas, chief of police; Dr. Alipio C. Ruiz, health officer. Councilors: Atty. Amadeo D. Seno, Atty. Gerardo M. Gestopa, Atty. Magno B. Dionson, Atty. Daniel C. Albano, Mr. Honorato Suson, Dr. Ariston J. Mahusay, and Mr. Sergio Sanchez. During the American occupation the following served as presidents: Leoncio Jaymen, Elias Espina, Benito Ceniza, Fabian Suico, Benigno Suico, Luis Espina, Segundo Jayme, Alejandro del Rosario, Ariston Cortes, and Alejandro Fortuna.
