CAFE-I's Build-A-Home and Food Festival

PERSPECTIVE - Cherry Piquero Ballescas - The Freeman

I sincerely hope you have already read and received the information about this event today. If not, I hope you will be able to read this early enough so you can still catch up with this precious event scheduled from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. today!

This Saturday's event is for "anyone who cares about the food we grow, cook, serve and eat!" The event takes place at the Fernandez Compound, J. Fortich St. (near Alliance of Two Hearts Church; across street from Courtyards@Banawa), Banawa, Cebu City and brought to you by the Communities for Alternative Food EcoSystems Initiative (CAFE-I) whose vision is Food for the Upliftment of All.

Remember the Cebu Farmers Market (CFM)? They started in 2014 in the small parking lot of Handuraw Pizza along Gorordo Avenue. Since then, they have been growing and at present, there are now three farmers markets providing local, good, healthy, food (naturally- or organically-grown).

Mondays at Mango Square Mall, Wednesdays at EchoStore, Streetscape, before Maria Luisa in Banilad, and Saturdays at Vibo Place, Escario, in front of the Capitol Parish Church, their three markets provide the freshest-picked organically-grown fruits, vegetables, and herbs from the finest farms in Cebu.

Imagine these 3 markets all in one place for this Saturday's event: CFM's Build-A-Home and Food Festival!

At Saturday's event, there will be organic farming materials (soil, fertilizer, compost). The following have also been lined up; talks, panels, cooking demos, farming tips, eco-building, children's activities, and music!

Eat, shop, learn and enjoy! Aside from the food festival, according to their leaflet: "Cebu Farmers Market is co-creating a new home…with YOU, ALL of You!"

"One of the main things that has always made us passionate, resilient, strong, and our work fun and growing…is COMMUNITY. So here we are, growing again, …and we're going back to what we know. COMMUNITY. Because, to truly build community, the community must build together. JOIN US and Let's Build a Home for Cebu Farmers Market Together!"

"Here at the new home shall be: 1.) A first Seed Library in Cebu that will house the finest organic and endemic seeds for farmers and gardeners across the country; 2.) A small store of CFM farmers' best products will be featured -organic fertilizers, soil, compost, fresh produce, products, 3.) A biodynamic teaching garden -from your heart and hands to the Earth to the cosmos and back!

At the new home, there will also be: 4.) Workshops on healthy cooking and eating, on farming tips and techniques; 5.) Consultations on healthy living, on healthy planet will be provided (spontaneously or by appointment); and, 6.) An incubator for creative thinking, nurturing, helping to shape new ideas worth putting out in the world (spontaneously or by appointment)!"

CFM is inviting you all to be a part of building "our new home."

You may have any of the items in their wishlist of furnishings and appliances to make the community house inviting and functioning efficiently, cohesively and productively. If you have any of the following -worktables, folding chairs, filing cabinets, wall fans, water heaters, chillers, stools, shelves, standing fans, paint materials and tools, printers, blackboard, projector and pull-up screens or other items you may wish to share, please do!

CFM also need volunteers for the following services: carpentry, refurbishing furniture, seed library tasks (sorting, labeling, cataloguing), store front management and more!

For more questions about donations and volunteering, please contact through Facebook- cebufarmersmarket- or please get in touch with Teresa Dosdos Ruelas (0915-647-4666) or Gembelyne Icamen (0917-702-9888).
