Boundaries and time

VERBAL VARIETY - Annie Fe Perez - The Freeman

Ten years ago, an hour seemed like forever -whether it was a class period or waiting to board a flight. The 60 minutes a decade ago felt like you can do so much within that period; you didn't have to go chasing time. There was no need to rush, unless you were really in the nick of time.

Today is different, you are bound to go after time. What used to be 60 minutes of so many activities, is now only 60 minutes which can accommodate an errand or two. Time flies so fast that you have to run after it. It goes into a vacuum, into an unknown that we all never know. In an hour I could only move around an area in a city in this very congested Metropolitan Cebu. Crossing cities is very impractical.

On the contrary, a lot of people are saying time has remained as it is and we must make time. Making time means prioritizing one's day into orders of importance. A day is divided into the most significant segments where time is supposed to be spent, then time allotted to this task or happening is very crucial. Making time may be hard -there are sacrifices to make and options to consider, but that is the ultimate goal in order to feel that time is still enough. How to make time? Set aside activities which are not important and make sure to spend it with the ones you love the most, while it still lasts.

Thus with time moving so fast, the boundaries that we set for our own privacy often gets trampled on by other people. These boundaries define who we are and are a reflection of our mistakes in the past. There are walls that we put up in order for us to have a holistic well-being, keeping our sanity and individuality sacred to ourselves. Boundaries are very important to set especially when everything today has become too public.

Why am I talking about such abstract points? It is because in a millennial world these concepts tend to be overlooked upon by others, especially those who lived in a different time as us. It is key for every young person to keep boundaries and time in place, as if no one can take this away from them. Not because your social media page dictates you to keep updating your life every single minute, you must always leave some room for yourself. I think most millennials forget this and so they tend to miss out.

It is perfectly normal to be private. I even think it is healthy. It is too much narcissism when time is spent online taking snaps of your hourly activities. What is key today is to be wise and innovative -how to maximize time is the challenge. If we can figure out how to do things at the same time without having to sacrifice quality, then I'd say there is time for everything.
