Julian N. Jumalon Street, Cebu City

CEBUPEDIA - Clarence Paul Oaminal - The Freeman

It is the street starting from the back of Vicente Rama Memorial National High School to Basak Elementary School side road and ending in Natalio Bacalso Avenue within the jurisdiction of  Barangay Basak Pardo.

Named in honor of  Professor Julian N. Jumalon famous lepido mosaic artist (using natural colors of discarded butterfly wings for artistic expression) earning him recognition both internationally and locally. In 1948, when silk screen printing was yet unknown, he made multi colored posters, he also painted with air brush.

Professor Jumalon was born in Binondo, Manila on October 18, 1909, son of spouses Carmen Navarro and Claudio Homboy Jumalon. His mother was from Zambales and his father was from Siquijor. His family, together with his sister, Anselma (married a Taay) came to Cebu in 1919. Julian enrolled at the then Cebu Provincial High School now known as Abellana National School. He finished Fine Arts at the University of the Philippine (Padre Faura) in 1936. He was the first Cebuano graduate of the University of the Philippines.

He married Felicitacion Nacorda Alcantara in 1938. She was the niece of Julian Alcantara (a street formerly known as P. del Rosario Extension was renamed in his honor). They had eight children: Ariel (married Paz Ceniza), Humaida (a professor), Renato, Osman (Julian Jr. now a member of the City's Cultural and Historical Arts Commission), Junonia (married John Baker), Noordin (married Gloria Collantes), Deadalus, Nepheronia (married an Ogburn).

There are butterflies named after his children, a butterfly is likewise named after Professor Julian. He was a recipient of numerous awards and citations. He was a BAUL Awardee, was an awardee during the 61st Charter Day Celebration of Cebu City, a PERLAS Awardee. He was conferred the Honoris Causa for Master of Science Biology from the University of San Carlos. He taught Arts at the Colegio del Sto. Niño. He also taught at the University of San Carlos Boys High School and at the University of the Philippines-Cebu Campus. In 1965 he was the Outstanding Alumni Awardee of the University of the Philippines. The Jumalon Museum, Butterfly Sanctuary and Arts Gallery was established in 1974 and still exists today managed by his children. It was awarded as an Outstanding Institution during the 77th Charter Day of Cebu City. He founded the Cebu Arts Association with Maestro Martin Abellana. In the 1970's with his close friend Maestro Martin and National Artist Jose Joya they strengthened the curriculum of the Fine Arts of U.P. Cebu. Among the famous works of Prof. Julian was the bust sculpture of Don Vicente Yap Sotto (the first was done in 1938 but was destroyed, then remade in 1948) and Don Guillermo Aboitiz in 1935.

The Cebu City Council on December 14, 2011 named a street in honor of a great Cebuano. The street naming ordinance was sponsored by Councilor Roberto A. Cabarrubias approved by Mayor Michael L. Rama.
