Palace says modernization miracle needed before 2010 polls

- Paolo Romero and Jess Diaz -

As of this writing, Manny Pacquiao still refuses to concede defeat although Darlene Antonino Custodio's lead has been mounting. And the victorious reelectionist congresswoman is now ready with her gown and makeup for her formal proclamation.

Most defeated candidates always come up with alibis and excuses of their defeat. Not Iloilo Vice Governor Roberto Armada who lost to Gov. Niel Tupas. Armada was quoted in a Philippine Star story as saying: "We were not cheated, we lost."

What I often hear from defeated candidates is. "We did not lose, we were cheated."

Sun Shimura, son of Mayor Ma. Lucia Loot, has been proclaimed winner in the electoral contest for the mayorship of Daanbantayan. Shimura, now the youngest mayor in Cebu, is seen as Daanbantayan's Rising Sun.

Rev. Fr. Eddie Panlilio won the governorship of Pampanga beating heavyweight opponents close to the President. God told the priest; "Ask and you shall receive." He must've asked for the governor's seat and got it.

I wonder if the Lord also reminded Father Panlilio. "I am thy Lord, not the jueteng lord."

Many sectors including the Comelec have lashed out at the so-called international observers who came supposedly to observe our election but ended up as no-holds-barred critics. The media and some professionals groups have come up with statements against the so-called observers for meddling in our political exercises.

"Pero hain na man tong mga so-called militant groups nga masuko sa mga langyaw nga manghilabot sa atong mga politikanhong kalihukan?" asked my friend Undo.

My friend Undo answered his own question. "The militant groups are just around. Wa masuko sa mahilabtanong international observers kay they are birds of the same feather."

Yoyoy Villame, probably the country's number one novelty songwriter and singer, has passed away, a victim of a heart attack. He was 69.

Although many of his songs were heavily Bisaya-accented despite their correct Tagalog lyrics, Yoyoy managed to outsell his "competitors" in the record bars. His "Mag-exercise Tayo Tuwing Umaga" is played during mass calesthenics where even foreigners are taking part.

I remember during one of the dinner affairs of the local press back in the 70s or 80s, Yoyoy did a duet with sportswriter Maning Oyson in singing "Magellan," also Yoyo's top-selling composition. After they sang, Yoyoy told Maning. "Opawan man ko nimo, torni." Both of them are gone. May they rest in peace.
