Taiwan military shows off furry new members of narcotics squad

Agence France-Presse

TAIPEI, Taiwan — Taiwan's military police shows off the latest recruits to its narcotics squad -- three dogs named Zander, Enoch and Hardy -- at a drug-finding demonstration in Taipei on Wednesday last week.

The dogs are the military's first canine narcotics squad, and 15 more sniffer dogs are set to join their ranks over the next two years.

"These sniffer dogs came from a long line of sniffer dog families and genetically have a very acute sense of smell," Liu Hsin-hong, Master Sergeant of ROC Military Police said.

"Drug sniffer dogs have two reasons for wearing shoes. First is to protect their paws from punctures while on duty; second is to prevent their claws from accidentally destroying any crime scene evidence," he also added.
