MANILA, Philippines— Just two days after Isko Moreno Domagoso assumed his post as new Manila mayor, he directed cleanup operations in the crowded streets of the Philippines' capital.
Moreno ordered a crackdown on vendors on the busy streets of Manila to decongest traffic chokepoints.
Among the areas Moreno and his clearing operations team visited were known shopping and market areas in the metropolis including CM Recto Avenue in Divisoria as well as Carriedo, and Blumentritt.
Moreno warned the vendors and police officers to stop engaging in bribery.
On Tuesday, The STAR reported that two people were arrested for collecting payoffs from vendors in Blumentitt market.

The two reportedly revealed that millions are being collected from bribes and other corrupt activities in Blumentritt Market alone.
In view of this, the new Manila mayor vowed to be consistent in his crackdown against illegal vendors and corruption throughout his term.
The mayor said that if the vendors return to the area, that would mean he had been paid off as well.
“‘Yan ang challenge ko sa inyo ah. ‘Pag ang Divisoria, Recto, Juan Luna napuno ulit ng vendor, isipin ninyo na nalagyan ako,” Moreno said.
(That’s my challenge for you. If Divisoria, Recto, Juan Luna fills up with vendors again, just think that I was bribed)
Aside from the crackdown on vendors, Moreno and Brigadier General Vicente Danao, Manila Police District chief,also seized a number of video “karera” machines in a bid to curb gambling. They led the destruction of the confiscated machiens at the Manila City Hall quadrangle on Wednesday morning.
