WATCH: Hontiveros tells Duterte human rights is part of human life
MANILA, Philippines — Sen. Risa Hontiveros called out President Rodrigo Duterte for saying that his concern is human lives rather than human rights in his third State of the Nation Address.
Speaking to reporters after the SONA, Hontiveros pointed out that human rights and human lives are “complementary.”
“Isang importanteng parte ng human life ay precisely human rights kasi kapag nalalabag ang karapatan ng tao... na-de-devaluate ang human life. Kaya nagkakamali si president,” Hontiveros said.
During his speech, Duterte, who is facing a preliminary examination into alleged crimes against humanity under his drug war, said: “Your concern is human rights; mine is human lives.”
The senator also lamented Duterte’s promise to remain relentless in his war on drugs that had already claimed thousands of Filipino lives.
